JOB DESCRIPTION:  K-8 PRINCIPAL

 

Qualifications:

 

Appropriate administrative certification as required by the Arizona Department of Education and experience preferred as a building level instructional leader in a public-school setting.

 

Reports to:

 

  • The Superintendent and Director of Educational Services

 

Job Goal:

 

  • To administer and supervise the instructional program of the school in accordance with District policies and regulations; to provide leadership and administrative skills to promote the educational development of students, the continuing growth and development of curriculum and evaluation in the school; and to provide leadership in making the school facility an attractive, pleasant and productive place in which to learn and work.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  • Study the educational needs of the students attending the school and develop plans for meeting them.

 

  • Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school.

 

  • Establish and maintain high standards of student conduct.

 

  • Organize and attend events to recognize student achievement.

 

  • Direct subordinates in the management of student activity affairs.

 

  • Assist with the development and implementation of district curriculum programs.

 

  • Utilize the services of resource personnel for maximum effectiveness in the classroom.

 

  • Acknowledge current changes and developments in curriculum by attending educational conferences, reading professional literature, visiting school systems in other areas, and participating in discussions pertinent to school administration and elementary education.

 

  • Supervise/direct the activities of building staff members in the performance of their duties.

 

  • Evaluate and counsel building staff members regarding their performance.

 

  • Care for and protect the building, the equipment, the grounds and other school property.

 

  • Make recommendations to the Superintendent concerning the improvement and maintenance of the physical plant.

 

  • Take reasonable precautions to safeguard the health and welfare of students and staff members, report accidents to the Superintendent, formulate plans for emergencies, and conduct evacuation drills each school month and keep written records of such drills.

 

  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of proper public relations in order to further community understanding and support of the school’s programs.

 

  • Be involved in the final interviewing and selection of certificated personnel and make recommendations concerning employment.

 

  • Conduct regular staff meetings to keep staff members informed of policy changes, new programs, etc.

 

  • Administer District policies, rules and regulations.

 

  • Maintain a close and constant relationship with the community and interpret the educational program to the citizens of the District.

 

  • Prepare and submit to the Superintendent the needs of the school in respect to personnel, equipment, supplies, curriculum, budgeting, preparation of required records and reports.

 

  • Be responsible for eliciting staff input in carrying out the responsibilities and assignments of the principalship.

 

  • Supervise maintenance of accurate records on student progress and attendance.

 

  • Maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities.

 

  • Be present at all Board meetings.

 

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

 

Length of Work Year:

 

  • Position begins 10 business days prior to start of school year and ends 10 business days following close of school year.

 

Evaluation:

 

  • Performance is evaluated by the Superintendent.

 

Supervision Received and Exercised:

 

  • Is supervised by the School Superintendent and Director of Educational Services; exercises supervision over teachers and school support staff.
