Job Description:

Position Summary:
The Secondary Science Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned instruction across multiple science disciplines, including 8th Grade General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Life Science. This position requires a versatile educator who can effectively teach a diverse range of scientific content while fostering critical thinking, inquiry, and real-world application of scientific concepts.

    • 8th Grade General Science
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Earth Science
    • Physics
    • Life Science

Learning Environment:
Instruction takes place in a unique and historic facility that was formerly a Harvey Girls reading room for the BNSF train station in Seligman, Arizona. The building has been repurposed to support science education, with one half serving as an extensive laboratory space equipped for hands-on experimentation, and the other half functioning as a classroom outfitted with a Mondo Board to support interactive instruction. The teacher is responsible for effectively utilizing both spaces to enhance student learning while maintaining safety and organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver rigorous, standards-based science instruction across all assigned courses.
  • Design and implement engaging lab activities that promote inquiry, experimentation, and higher-order thinking.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic needs and learning styles of students.
  • Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment in accordance with all safety regulations and district policies.
  • Integrate technology, including use of the Mondo Board, to support and enhance instruction.
  • Develop and use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and guide instruction.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and progress.
  • Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment that promotes respect, responsibility, and a passion for learning.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administration, and support staff to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom activities.
  • Participate in school events, professional development, and district initiatives.
  • Organize and host an annual Science Fair that showcases student learning and engages families and the community.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong content knowledge across multiple science disciplines.
  • Ability to teach complex scientific concepts in an accessible and engaging manner.
  • Skilled in classroom management and fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and proper handling of equipment and materials.
  • Ability to adapt instruction and lab activities based on available resources and environmental conditions.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Arizona teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements in science (or ability to obtain).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of secondary science curriculum and instructional best practices.
  • Experience teaching multiple science subjects preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in both a classroom and laboratory setting within a historic building.
  • Requires the ability to supervise students in a lab environment and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • May involve lifting, moving equipment, and standing for extended periods.

Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policies and administrative guidelines.

Compensation and Additional Opportunities:

  • Eligible for participation in Proposition 301 performance pay, with the potential to earn up to $13,500 based on district criteria and available funding.
  • Opportunities for additional stipends, including but not limited to serving as a class advisory sponsor.
  • Coaching and extracurricular activity opportunities may be available with additional compensation.
